May 7, 1939 - May 26, 2018
James Edgar Minor, age 79, of Taft, CA passed away peacefully with his family by his side, on May 26, 2018 in Bakersfield, CA.
Jim was born on May 7, 1939 in Lindsay, CA to Doyle and Velma Minor. He spent his youth in Lindsay, Porterville and Corcoran. When James was a senior in high school, he and his mom, dad and sisters Doylene, Sharon and Janis settled in Taft, CA. Taft was destined to be the next beautiful chapter of Jim’s life.
It is here that he met his beautiful, loving and devoted wife, Patricia Helmer, and where they would begin their lives and raise their five children, David, Daniel, Julie, Jeffrey and Nathan. His family meant everything to him. Both he and Pat relished in the task of raising their children and supporting the rest of their family members and he especially enjoyed and loved his grandchildren.
Jim worked for the Chevron Pipe Line Co. for 32 years. He was careful and conscientious at work. In fact, the lunchbox he used still has a safety award sticker on it! He never cut corners and made sure that all the Chevron workers were safe. He also loved tinkering and fixing things. He was extremely handy and could fix almost anything. He was a member of the Taft High graduation class of 1958 and a graduate of Taft College. Jim also proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves.
The Minor family enjoyed spending time together. Jim was adventurous and loved to be outside enjoying all that our world had to offer. Jim taught the Minor children how to fish, camp and how to mine for gold and other treasures and he often went to a desert gold claim with the Taft Prospectors Club. He loved searching for treasure with a metal detector and that excitement was shared by his children. His second love was looking towards the heavens. He enjoyed gazing at the stars and flying his hand-built remote controlled planes. He had a group of friends that he would fly with frequently and his children often tagged along on his adventures.
His life can be described in a few simple words; love, family and adventure. He was a gem in our society and he will be deeply missed by all who know him. We cherished the time spent with our beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather.
James Minor was preceded in death by his parents Doyle and Velma Minor, his sister, Doylene Doughty, his mother-in-law, Josephine Helmer and father-in-law, Kenneth Helmer.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Patricia, his sisters Sharon Noel, Janis Stevens and Roy Doughty, Doylene’s husband and their families. He is also survived by his children and their families; son David and wife Gwen; son Daniel and wife Sally & grandchildren Natalie and Veronica; daughter Julie Minor; son Jeffrey and wife Barbara, grandchildren, Christopher, Joshua and Amy; son Nathan and wife Pattie and grandchild, Renelle Gisyer; also, sisters-in-laws & brothers- in-laws, Anne Helmer, husband Mike Foster, Diane Smith, husband Jim Smith & special niece, Patrice Leigh & many other nieces & nephews & cousins.
