Richard Edward Norred passed peacefully at home in Santa Maria July 1st at the age of 92 with family at his side. Richard was born in Coalinga, CA Oct. 14, 1925 to Phillip Edward Norred and Gladys Lee Smith, the second of 3 children. He attended schools in Visalia before joining the Navy at 17 during WWII where he served in the Pacific, his favorite assignment being an electrician on the ABSD1, a floating dry dock responsible for repairing many ships damaged by the Japanese.
In 1949, he married Barbara Medley, his wife of 69 years. Richard is survived by wife Barbara, daughters Lynn McGill (Bob) and Janet Cooper (Marty). Son Dale predeceased Richard 3 years ago. Richard is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren as well as numerous step grandchildren.
After time spent in Lindsay and San Bernardino, the family moved to Taft in 1966 where Richard and Barbara remained until 1999 before moving to the Salton Sea area where they lived until 2013, finally relocating to Santa Maria to be closer to daughter Lynn.
Richard spent his career in the telephone business, with the last 20 years in Taft, retiring as CO Plant Superintendent in 1987. While in Taft, Richard was a member of the Taft Rotary Club and is a past president as well as a Paul Harris Fellow. Richard and Barbara were also very active in the First Baptist Church of Taft. After retiring he became an HO train enthusiast. He was an accomplished wood worker, even building his own camper in the early 60s.
Arrangements are with Neptune Society and final interment is planned at the National Cemetery in Riverside, CA.
