Funeral services will be held at Westside Believers Fellowship on Friday, August 12, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. for longtime Taft resident, Don Gillaspie, 71. Burial will follow in the West Side District Cemetery. Mr. Gillaspie was born on November 6, 1939 in San Antonio, Texas and passed away in Bakersfield on August 7, 2011. Mr. Gillaspie moved to Taft at the age of 2 with his family. His father was stationed at Gardner Field. Mr. Gillaspie graduated from Taft College and went on to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. He loved to fly and had his pilot’s license for many years. Mr. Gillaspie worked at the post office for many years and retired in 1990. After retiring he started Chroma Teleproduction. He loved filming around town and could be seen at almost any event in the community, as well as school productions and church services. Mr. Gillaspie sang for many years with Masterworks Chorale and traveled numerous times to Europe with them, but also on his own. Mr. Gillaspie served in the National Guard. He also served on many boards and associations, including the West Kern Oil Museum, Taft Historical Society, and Community Concert Association in Bakersfield. He was also a member of Community Christian Fellowship. Mr. Gillaspie was preceded in death by his parents, William M. and Dorothy Gillaspie. His survivors include his brothers and sister, Bill Gillaspie of Douglas Flat, Bob Gillaspie of Salem, Oregon, Sue Gillaspie Pirtle of Keaau, Hawaii, and Alvin Gillaspie of Bella Vista; his best friend, Cindy Reid of Taft; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family has suggested that donations in Mr. Gillaspie’s memory may be made to Community Christian Fellowship.
