Money is tight, there is no doubt about that, and government agencies everywhere are having to make curtail spending.
The City of Taft is  in the same predicament. All spending that is not absolutely necessary has to be cut while we weather the current financial crisis
But every once in while you have to make an exception.
That's what theTaft City Council will be asked to do Tuesday night.
Two weeks ago, Don Clark asked the city to donate $10,000 to the Wall of Valor at the Kern Veterans Memorial.
That's a lot of money, but it couldn't be for a better cause.
It will be Taft's contribution for a  memorial to the men killed in combat defending our country since World War I.
Our community has  contributed heavily to American armed forces over the past century, and made more than its share of sacrifice.
Of the 1,007 Kern County residents killed in combat, 110, more than 10 percent, have come from Taft.
We need to  recognize that sacrifice and ensure that  it will be remembered for years to come.
Taft has always remembered its own, recently rededicating a city park in honor of  our Veterans and building a memorial here to  the men killed in action.
Our post office is  named in honor of Sgt. Larry Pierce, a man who gave his own life in defense of his country and to save the lives of the men he fought with.
Our veterans, especially those who gave their lives, are close to our heart.
So lets put our money where our heart is and give $10,000 to the Wall of Valor at the Kern Veterans Memorial.
On one hand, it is a lot of money. But on the other, it's less than $100 per man from Taft who gave his life for us. It's a small price to pay for such a sacrifice.
