JV wins too, to stay undefeated
WASCO — On Tuesday, the Taft High varsity girls’ tennis team made it seven in a row with an 8-1 win over the Wasco Tigers, while Taft’s JV won 9-0 to remain unbeaten.
At No. 1 singles, Leighton May persevered to beat the steady Veronica Garcia, 6-4, 6-4. Diana Huizar beat Yamilet Bustamante, 6-2, 6-2. Brisa Guizar came from behind to beat McKenzie Salyards, 7-5, 6-2. Dariana Calderon was the first one off the court with a 6-1, 6-1 drubbing of Esmeralda Rodriguez. Elizabeth Huizar finished a minute later with a double-breadstick win over Gisela Vargas, 6-1, 6-1. Wasco earned its only point at No. 6 singles when Cielo Woggn won the first set over Alex Albert, 6-1, but then had trouble breathing in the near 100-degree heat and lost the next two sets, 6-4, 10-7.
In doubles, Guizar and Calderon beat Garcia and Bustamante, 8-6. Sisters Diana and Elizabeth Huizar beat Rodriguez and Vargas, 8-5. And, Rosa Silva and Alondra Cisneros fell behind to Claire Morano and Karina Barboza, 5-6, before winning the last three games to end the match, 8-6.
Taft improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the South Sequoia League. Wasco dropped to 4-3 overall; 0-1 in the SSL.
Taft travels to Robert F. Kennedy on Tuesday prior to the marquee match Wednesday when Taft hosts perennial powerhouse Bakersfield Christian.
Taft easily won the JV match, also held at Wasco because the Tigers do not have a JV coach.
At No. 1 singles, Yuvia Woggn beat Ema Bloemhof, 6-0, 6-2. In the closest match of the day, Gabriela Aguilar came from behind to beat Irais Ibarra, 6-7 (3-7), 6-0, 10-8. Ivonne Gutierrez beat Halee Nunez, 7-5, 6-3. Valerie Munoz beat Sara Gutierrez, 6-1, 6-0. Jessica De La Cruz beat Brianna Ramos, 6-1, 6-1. And, Arelie Paz blanked Lucina Rodriguez, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Aguilar and Gutierrez beat Bloemhof and Ibarra, 8-3. Munoz and De La Cruz shut out Gutierrez and Ramos, 8-0. And, making their tennis debut, Kendall Robison and Zughei Guzman beat Hailey Barr and Esmeralda, 8-5.
Taft’s JV improved to 2-0; 1-0 in the SSL.
