Leighton May wins No. 1 singles in double overtime
On Thursday, the Taft High varsity girls’ tennis team made it eight in a row with an 9-0 home win over the Arvin Bears, while Taft’s JV won 7-1 on the road to remain unbeaten.
In the showcase match at No. 1 singles, Leighton May came from behind to win in double overtime over the steady Sofia Torres, 3-6, 6-2, 12-10. Diana Huizar beat Carolina Cruz, 6-0, 6-3. Brisa Guizar had no problem with Jazmin Florez, 6-1, 6-0. Dariana Calderon was the first one off the court with a double bagel of Kathy Garibaldo, 6-0, 6-0. Elizabeth Huizar finished a minute later with a double-breadstick win over Iyali Regla, 6-1, 6-1. And, Rosa Silva got past Evelyn Duran, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles, Guizar and Calderon rolled over Torres and Cruz, 6-2, 6-2. Diana Huizar and Cielo Woggn ran over Florez and Garibaldo, 6-1, 6-1. And, Alondra Cisneros and Yuvia Woggn blanked Jackelyn Gallardo and Paloma Gomez, 6-0, 6-0.
Taft improved to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the South Sequoia League. Arvin dropped to 1-4 overall; 0-2 in the SSL.
Taft travels to Robert F. Kennedy on Tuesday prior to the marquee match Wednesday when Taft hosts perennial powerhouse Bakersfield Christian.
Taft easily won the JV match, 7-1. Neither team fielded a No. 3 doubles team.
At No. 1 singles, Gabriela Aguilar beat Natalia Hernando, 6-3, 6-0. Ivonne Gutierrez beat Yadine Rodriguez, 6-4, 6-2. Valerie Munoz shut out Perla Aguilar, 6-2, 6-2. Jessica De La Cruz beat Daisy Pahero, 6-2, 6-2. Arelie Paz beat Elisabeth Jiminez, 6-0, 6-3. Arvin earned its only point at No. 6 singles when Emily Azpitarte beat Taft’s Kendall Robison, playing in only her second game, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Aguilar and Gutierrez beat Hernando and Pahero, 6-1, 6-1. Munoz and De La Cruz beat Rodriguez and Rebecca S. 6-3, 6-2.
Taft’s JV improved to 3-0; 2-0 in the SSL.
