'Cats close season on Wednesday
The Taft Union High School boys JV soccer team is closing in on its first chance to win the South Sequoia League Championship. The team had a chance this week to knock off two of the teams in the same race, Arvin and Chavez high schools.
They managed to play to a draw against both teams which didn't really help out the Wildcats. There is one game left in league play, if everything falls into place, the Wildcats could be SSL champs after Wednesday night.
Coach Robert Gonzalez had a few comments after Thursday night's game, “Tonight's game was a tough one, Arvin is sitting in first place. Our goal was to get on top of them by maybe a goal, but that didn't happen. I only have 11 players to field right now and have been playing the last six games like that. Our results have been great. After our loss at Arvin 1-0, we have went on a good run. If we would have beaten Arvin today it could have been the first time the JV has won SSL. That was tough for us tonight.
“Now we have to wait and see, Arvin has two more games and we have one. If they lose, we might be tied for SSL, so we need to execute our last game on Wednesday. I think the guys have been doing great for me, they fight, they really want it for their team and not themselves. They have been doing it together and show up to practice. At practice we go harder than we do in a game and it is paying off and I am really proud of them.”
