Brock Mizener, Bryce Veach and Caiden McAfee to play in all-star game
It isn't every day that you can say that you have done something that hasn't been done before. Today, the 8th grade Lincoln Lions Basketball team can do just that. They played in the Jr. High Kern County Basketball Tournament on Friday and Saturday and collected their final Championship trophy of the season.
This is the first time in the school's history that any team, boys or girls, has brought this trophy back to the school.
They have went unbeaten in all of the league tournaments this season and even played in the Bakersfield City Tournament and came away with the championship. This was the last piece of the puzzle the boys needed to complete their dream season and they got it.
On Friday, the boys played the Beardsley Bears and came away with a victory with a score of 50-24. On Saturday, the Lions played two games. The first game was against the Murray Mustangs from Ridgeview.
Coach Oscar Nuno commented, “The boys came out a little sluggish in this game. At halftime the teams were tied 19-19. After the halftime, they came out fired up and finished the game strong to get the win 50-35.”
The final game on Saturday came against a very familiar opponent, the Rio Bravo Greeley Gauchos. The Lions have faced off against this team in several championship games at tournaments this season. It was just a matter of which Gaucho team they would play.
In some games, the Lions dispatched them with ease, and other games, the boys had to dig deep to get the win. In this game, they faced the latter.
The championship was a roller coaster ride. Coach Nuno commented, “The boys started this game like they did the second game, a little slow. RBG was able to get off to a good start against us and take the lead. We came back and had a good run but going into halftime, RBG had the lead. It was a battle the whole game but we played as a team, like we have the whole season and we got the win.”
The Lions closed the game out for the win by the score of 48-34. This team has worked hard this season and deserve every bit of recognition they receive.
As it has been mentioned before, this team has played together since the 6th grade. They won the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade championships together. These boys are more like brothers than they are team mates. These boys will be heading over to the high school and let's hope that they can enjoy the same kind of success that they did during there time at Lincoln.
Congratulations to coach Oscar Nuno, for teaching these boys and leading them to their final goal. Congratulations to the team, Brock Mizener, Bryce Veach, Jason Woodards, Walker Maino, Kristofer Downey, Brodee Trejo, Caiden McAfee, Karson Leota and Kane Dayton. You boys have shown sportsmanship and heart all season long.
Three of the Lions were picked to play in the All-Star game on March 17 at Beardsley Jr. High. Congratulations to Brock Mizener, Bryce Veach and Caiden McAfee. Lincoln Jr. High will be represented very well by these boys.
