Cougars win 5-2 at home

Taft College’s baseball team completed a conference sweep a to finish a successful week of action.
The Cougars (8-7 CVC, 18-16 overall) will try to extend their four-game Central Valley Conference winning streak Tuesday  when they open a three-game series at Porterville (4-11, 5-29). Game 2 will be played Thursday at Cougar Field at 2 p.m. with the series winding up Saturday at Porterville.

On Saturday TC scored four runs in the first inning and that was enough to win 5-2 behind another solid outing from Kaivon Kealoha, who allowed but one earned run and struck out seven batters in seven innings of work to run his record to 6-3.

Leadoff hitter Wesley Hebert, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound freshman from Eunice, LA, socked a homer – his eighth of the season – to lead off the bottom of the first and get the Cougars rolling.

The Blue Devils scored twice in the second off Kealoha but the sophomore right-hander pitched scoreless ball over the next five innings. Micah McCulley came to to hold Merced hitless over the final two innings to earn his second save of the season.

Jayce Gardner went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Kenji McCarthy smacked a two-run single in the first ining.

At Merced on Thursday the Cougars won 8-2 with Javier Ramirez and Gardner both going 3-for-5 and Jade Smoot cracked his sixth homer of the season.
