Rec's STOP provides scholarships to get more kids involved

The West Side Recreation and Park District partners with several businesses in the community. On Saturday, Robin Fleming, a representative from Chevron, presented the WSRPD with a check in the amount of $15,000 to use for their S.T.O.P. Scholarship Program.

The S.T.O.P. (Strive To Optimize Participation) Scholarship Program is in place to help kids in the community who need financial assistance to take part in the programs that the WSRPD offers. The WSRPD relies on contributions such as the one Chevron made to help fund the S.T.O.P. Program.

“Chevron has been a tremendous partner to us over the years," said WSRPD Administrator Les Clark "The S.T.O.P. Program is an unbelievable thing for the youth in our community. Over the last 10 years, there generous donations have allowed thousands of kids to participate in programs which they might not otherwise get a chance to participate in.

“When Chevron first became a partner with us, it was during track season," Clark added. "That year participation in the track program increased by 450% because of their donation to the S.T.O.P. Program. Now look at where our track program is at. Our track program has gotten much stronger not only because of the coaching but also because of the kids that are now able to participate in the program, it is fantastic. It's not just our track program, but all of our sports programs.”

To be eligible for a Scholarship, an application needs to be filled out, the child must be a good student and come from a low income family. From there, kids have the opportunity to participate in any of the athletic programs or classes that the WSRPD offers.
