'Cats at home for SSL opener Friday
Friday Taft Union Coach Coach George Falgout and his varsity football team will have a tough test on their hands. They will be playing the RFK Thunderbirds, who so far this season are undefeated. The Wildcats are 2-2 so far and enter the game on a two game losing streak.
The Thunderbirds have a similar offense to the Wildcats, they are primarily a running team. RFK's top rusher, Tyreak Walker is averaging 155 yards per game. The Wildcats top rusher, Jordan Miranda is averaging 104 yards per game.
At the quarterback position, it is about as even as it can get. For Taft, Jackson Van Roekel is averaging 49 yards per game and David Estrada of RfK is averaging 45 yards per game.
Last week, RFK got a 32-14 win against Liberty High School and Taft lost to Coalinga 34-21. So far this season, the Wildcat defense has looked pretty good. They have come up with some big stops when needed. The team’s two losses haven't been because they were outplayed, but because they made some small mistakes throughout the game that cost the points.
The Wildcats have had trouble holding onto the ball on offense, but as coach Falgout said last week, “We are driving the ball down the field and getting positive plays, we are just making mistakes and turning over the ball.”
The team will have no doubt tried to shore up this situation and will be ready to get back in the win column. Taft’s two losses have been against opponents who came in losing multiple games, so now is Taft's time to do the same. They have had a week to regroup and work and are hungry for the win.
It is going to come down to who wants it more in this game and which defense steps up. It should be an interesting game with the two teams being so similar. The action starts at 5 p.m. when the JV teams take the field and the varsity game will begin at 7:30 p.m. This week the Taft FFA will be serving up some more delicious tri tip sandwiches, so come out and come hungry to watch some Friday night football.
