Alex Holland pitched a two-hitter and went 4-for-4 at the plate here last Thursday to lead Taft College to its first softball win of the young season.
The Cougars rode Holland’s 11-strikeout performance to a 5-2 victory over Allan Hancock in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader.
The Bulldogs, however, bounced back to nip the Cougars 11-10 in the second game. They scored the tying run in the seventh and winning run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to prevent a Cougar sweep.
The split puts TC’s record at 1-3.
“Our hitting was very strong,” said head coach Stefanie Walsh. “That gives us a little confidence now.”
After getting the win in the first game, Holland took the loss in the second when she came on in relief in the seventh and gave up the tying and winning runs – both unearned. She struck out four and walked two.
Bulldog catcher Caitlin Voss almost single-handedly wrecked the Cougars in Game 2, going 4-for-5 and driving in seven runs with two homers, a double and a single.
“She was very dangerous,” Walsh said. “That was a great game. It went back and forth, back and forth.”
A leadoff single, passed ball, sacrifice and wild pitch plated the winning run for the Bulldogs.
The Cougars out-hit Hancock 25-11 on the day, including 16-9 in the second game.
Walsh felt her defense had a solid day – committing only two errors and turning in a rare triple play.
“Our outfield played really well and had a triple play,” she said. “That’s something that’s pretty rare.”
It happened in the fourth inning of the first game and the score tied 2-2.
Holland walked the bases loaded to bring up Bulldog leadoff hitter Alyssa Abayari, who hit a line drive to center field that Alyssa Eli-Kido gloved on the run, fired to third baseman Brooklyn Amador, who in turn wheeled and threw to Brittany Peterson at second, catching two Bulldog runners unable to scramble back safely.
After that the Cougars scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth for the win.
In the first game, Holland got help at the plate from Amador, who had a single and double. Ashley McKeown slugged an RBI triple and Stephanie Keith banged a double. Only one of Hancock’s runs was earned.
In the second game the Cougars led 2-0, 5-3, 8-5 and 10-9 before the Bulldogs tied it in the seventh and won it in the eighth.
The Cougars play Gavilan in Fresno on Friday and travel to Bakersfield College Saturday to take on BC at 10 a.m. and Cuesta at 12:30 p.m.
