The Taft College women’s basketball team moved into second place in the Central Valley Conference here Saturday with a 74-56 victory over Porterville College.
The win improves TC’s conference record to 5-3 (17-9 overall) and breaks a three-way logjam for the runner-up spot among the Cougars, Merced and Reedley.
While Taft was cruising past the last-place Pirates (0-8), Sequoias was upsetting Reedley 61-53 and front-runner Fresno was pasting Merced 86-61 as the Rams appear headed for their fifth consecutive undefeated conference season.
The Porterville game was tied at 30 at the half.
“They (Porterville) were shooting really well,” said Cougar coach Tyrone Taylor. “They got some good looks and put up some good shots.”
The Pirates took a 34-30 lead two minutes into the second half before the Cougars found their shooting touch.
“We hit two threes to take the lead and then pulled away after that,” Taylor said.
Demmi Nunn paced the Cougars with 23 points and six assists and got support from Summer Webb with 23 points and 10 assists and LaVera Robertson with 12 points and five rebounds.
Just two conference games remain – Wednesday against Sequoias in Visalia and Saturday at home against Merced in a game that could determine if the Cougars earn a spot in the playoffs.
The Cougars defeated Sequoias 60-50 at home in the first round of conference play and edged Merced 72-70 in Merced.
TC will take a balanced attack to Visalia.
