The Russian government has offered to meet with representatives of the main opposition group in Syria, the AP reports. Russia had previously criticized other countries for recognizing the rebellion as the legitimate voice of the Syrian people. While the offer is not a formal recognition, it shows Russia acknowledges the group's significance.
Russia and Syria have long been allies, as Syria host Russia's only out-of-country naval base. Syria is also a longtime customers of the Russian arms industry.
The Syrian revolt has gone on for almost two years, and has killed approximately 40,000 people.
