CHP examining wreckage to try to find VIN of pickup
The victim of a fatal crash on Highway 119 Thursday morning has still not been identified.
The Kern County Coroner issued a press release Thursday night identifying him only as “John Doe,”
His age and hometown unknown.
The California Highway Patrol is having a special auto theft team examine the wreckage of the GMC Sierra pickup to try to locate a vehicle identification number, CHP officer Maria Pagano said.
The truck was crushed and burned in the high-speed impact on the overpass over I-5.
Pagano said officers have found only a small fragment of a license plate.
The pickup was driving west at what witnesses said was a high rate of speed when it crashed into the rear trailer of a produce truck turning left on the highway from the southbound freeway off-ramp.
The produce truck driver was not injured.
Both fog and speed are being looked at as collision factors, Pagano said.
