Boy from North Las Vegas was not wearing seatbelt


A teenager from North Las Vegas was killed Sunday afternoon in a single-vehicle accident on Highway 46 west of Lost Hills.

 The California Highway Patrol said Sergio Lara, 17, was asleep in the back of a sports utility vehicle when the right rear tire tread separated causing the driver, Federico Lara Reyes, 44, to lose control of the vehicle.

The SUV swerved onto the dirt shoulder, struck a small guardrail and overturned.

The victim, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and one passenger, Azalea Lara, 10, suffered minor injuries.
Two other passengers, Maria Perez, 42, and Abraham Valenzuela, 21, escaped injury.
All were wearing seatbelts.
The crash occurred on Highway 46 just east of Kecks Road at 3 p.m.
