Grinder may have set it off
Kern County firefighters extinguished a small grass fire in Derby Acres Thursday afternoon. The fire broke out about two p.m. in the northwest corner of this small community near Fourth and Emerald.
One resident said sparks from a grinder touched off the small fire, which burned less than a quarter acre. It spread through fences and into a corral and threatened several small outbuildings before it was knocked down.
Firefighters from Taft, Fellows and McKittrick responded to the fire.
