Lady Indians defeat North County Christian, lose to Coast Union

The Maricopa varsity volleyball team experienced a mixed bag of feelings in the final full week of Septermber when they split a pair of matches against Coast Union last Thursday and Tuesday.

With the split, the Lady Indians are currently 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Coast Valley League.

Maricopa wrapped up the week last Thursday with a four set loss to Coast Union at home.

“They are a very good team with a lot of talent,” said Maricopa coach Reina Cruz. “We tried to keep up but couldn't.”

The Lady Indians lost the opening two sets of the match by scores of 25-13 and 25-17 before edging out Coast Union in the third set 25-22. Coast Union bounced back in the final set by defeating Maricopa 25-7.

Heidi Wise led Maricopa in points served with 11 including 2 aces. Crystal Dolley led Maricopa in total hits with 21 and kills with 10 while Taylor Geer had 16 total hits. Emily Phillips chipped in with 13.

Wise also led in digs with 25 while Shanie Caples had 20.

Maricopa had an easier time a couple of days earlier when they swept North County Christian in three sets at Atascadero.

“The girls played very well tonight,” said Cruz. “They had really good hits and digs. Tough serving as well.”

Maricopa won the first set by a score of 25-11 before edging out North County Christian 25-19 and 25-22 in the final two sets.

Wise led points served with 12 and aces with 8. Dolley led the team in total hits with 10 and kills with 2. Noemi Gomez followed with 9 total hits while Geer had 7. Phillips led in digs with 22 while Wise had 11.
