Taft defeats Highland in two

The last time the Taft junior varsity volleyball team took the court for a match was two weeks ago. Despite that time off the Lady Wildcats showed no rust Tuedsay afternoon when they swept the Highland Scots 25-20 and 25-16 in Bakersfield.

“The girls were slow to start each game against Highland,” said Taft coach Taylor Miller. “But they showed me they had it in them and we defeated the Highland Scots in two games.”

Taft got off to a fast start with a 7-3 run but Highland roared back with an 8-1 run to lead 11-8. Taft respsonded with five unanswered points to regain the lead at 13-11 highlighted by an ace.

The Lady Wildcats maintained a small lead until they went on a 5-0 run to lead 21-16.

Highland made one final attempt to get back into the set by cutting the deficit to 21-19. That was as close as the Lady Scots got after Taft went on a 4-1 run to close out the set.

Taft and Highland were involved in a tighter second set with the teams tying each other seven times. During that period of time, neither team had a lead larger than three with Taft holding that advantage at 5-2.

Finally, Taft pulled away with a 12-3 run thanks in part to an ace from Haylee Tracy.

Caitlyn Emberson led the team in kills with 2. Haylee Tracy had 1 while Chanel Tremain led in passing with 29. Tracy followed with 23. Desirae Navarro had an assist while Kayla Schuyler had 2 kills.

Taft returns to action Saturday when they take part in the Golden Valley Tournament. The Lady Wildcats begin their tournament run at 8:40 a.
