Drug trafficking charge dismissed against man caught be citizens while fleeing from police

A drug suspect arrested in South Taft earlier this month will stand trial in Bakersfield on two felony counts and two misdemeanors, but a fifth count, possession of a controlled substance for sale, was dismissed.

Steven Andrew Gates had pleaded not guilty to all counts.

At a preliminary hearing held Tuesday in Taft Branch of Kern County Superior Court, Gates was ordered to stand trial on charges of possession of a controlled substance and transportation of a controlled substance, both felonies; and resisting arrest and destruction of evidence, both misdemeanors.

Gates, 41, was arrested by Kern County Sheriff's deputies on Oct. 4 with the help of two citizens who caught him.

According to reports, Gates ran from a deputy who attempted to contact him in the 900 block of Buena Vista.

As Gates fled through yards, two men came out and detained him and held him until deputies arrived.

Gates is scheduled to be arraigned in metro division of Kern County Superior Court on Oct. 30.

He is being held in the Lerdo pre-trial facility on $40,000 bail.
