One student was shot this morning at Taft Union High School when a shooter reportedly walked into the science building with a shotgun.
The suspect is reportedly in custody.
Taft, CA - The identity of the victim is not known at this point. Sources at the school say it is a student who was shot in the chest.
In incident started at about 9 a.m., putting all Taft area schools into lockdown.
There is at least one victim of the shooter. The Kern County Sheriff Department confirms one student was shot and airlifted to a Bakersfield hospital.
Taft Police, Kern County Sheriff SWAT, the California Highway Patrol and the FBI are going room to room at Taft High School clearing the rooms.
KCSO spokesman Ray Pruitt confirmed only one victim of the shooter. He said the shotgun was recovered at the scene. He said the shooter was a student at the high school.
Students are being taken to the auditorium after being evacuated from classrooms by law enforcement.
Students in area schools have been released to their parents.
Congressman Kevin McCarthy offered his sympathies.
"I am deeply saddened and troubled by news of the shooting. Judy and I offer our prayers to the victims, their families and the entire Taft community," McCarthy said in a statement.
State Senator Jean Fuller and Assembly Woman Shannon Grove also offered her condolences on Twitter.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the Students, Faculty, and Staff of Taft High School," Grove tweeted.
"Thoughts and prayers are with students, faculty, families and first-responders at Taft Union H.S. and rest of the community this morning," Fuller offered on her Twitter page.
