Defendant arrested after break-in at golf course, theft of truck

The Taft man arrested on auto theft and burglary charges following a series of crimes in a rural area north of Taft in March will be sentenced in late April after he entered no contest pleas to three felony counts.

James Brian Swope was arrested by Kern County Sheriff's deputies following leads after a break-in at a shed at Buena Vista Golf Course on March 14.

They found a car registered to Swope broken down near the golf course, then learned a vehicle had been stolen a short distance away from a home.

Deputies then received a report of sighting of the stolen truck that led them to Maricopa.

Swope was subsequently arrested by deputies when he returned to the car that had broken down, and they found the keys to the stolen truck in his pocket.

Swope entered guilty pleas to counts of auto theft, burglary and petty theft with three or more priors and two counts of grand theft and one count of possession of stolen property were dismissed, according to Kern County Superior Court records.
