10-11 year olds win while 9-10 year olds lose
The games may have been played on a familiar field but the outcomes were completely different Saturday with the Taft 10-11 year old all star team defeating Wasco while the Taft 9-10 year old all-star team lost to Delano in the teams respective District 61 Little League all-star tournaments on Field No.1 at the George Blanco Complex in Taft.
Taft's 10-11 year olds started off the afternoon with an 11-1 victory over Wasco.
While Wasco eventually lost the game, they made the opening move with a single up the middle, a stolen base, a passed ball and another stolen base to lead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
Taft bounced back in the top of the second inning with Reese Hammons single to left field, a two base error and a ground out to score Hammons.
One inning later, Taft opened the floodgates by scoring seven runs while batting around the lineup. Manny Chavez highlighted the run with a run scoring double while Kristopher Downey getting a two run single.
Taft added one more run in the fourth before tacking on two more in the fifth highlighted by Hammons run scoring triple. The game was called due to the mercy rule.
The Taft 9-10 year olds could not match the early game after they fell to Delano 14-1.
While it was Delano that had the big break through, it was Taft that got on the board first with a leadoff walk to Landon Edgar. Edgar advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on a combination of a passed ball and an error by the catcher.
However, Delano broke open the game in the top of the third inning when they erupted for nine runs while sending 13 batters to the plate and getting six hits.
Delano followed up with five runs in the fourth to seal the victory.
The Taft teams are not done. The 10-11 year olds will play Delano Sunday night at 7:30 p.m in the winners bracket. Meanwhile, the Taft 9-10 year olds will play in the losers bracket Sunday afternoon. They will play the loser of the Arvin-Wasco game at 2 p.m.
