Team wins final three matches in California City Tournament
The Taft varsity volleyball team got in one final tuneup before the start of the league season got underway Tuesday. It turned out to be a mixed bag after the Lady Wildcats won the Bronze Bracket Championship at the California City Tournament this past Friday and Saturday.
With the tournament record, the Lady Wildcats are 15-4-2 heading into league play.
“This past weekend was a much needed learning and growing experience for us in regards to how important we are to one another on and off the court,” said Taft coach Adeana McDaniel Furman.
Taft got off to a rough start to begin the tournament when they split their first pool play game with Eastside 25-14, 21-25.
Sarah Lopez led Taft in kills with 6 while Angela Faagau had 5 and Brooke Reilly had 4. Neher led in aces with 4 while Reilly had a block. Neher led in digs with 7 while Cyerra Davis had 6. Salazar had 19 assists in the match.
The tournament grew tougher for Taft after they fell 25-17, 25-18 in the second pool play match.
“We never seemed to get ourselves set defensively during this match, which led to easy points for Mammoth,” said Furman.
Lopez led in kills with 5 while Faagau had 4 and Reilly had 3. Faagau led in blocks with 3 while Reilly, Mikayla Bratcher and Lopez each had 2.
Neher led in digs with 11 while Salazar had 5. Salazar also had 19 assists.
Frazier Mountain got revenge on the Lady Wildcats in the third pool play match with the Lady Falcons winning 25-15, 25-23.
Reilly led in kills with 6 while Faagau had 4. Hunter Everson led in aces with 2. Neher led in digs with 9 while Allison Mizener led in assists with 11 while Salazar followed with 6.
Taft bounced back the next day as the third seeded team in the quarterfinals when they defeated Mojave 25-7, 25-13.
Christina Warner led in kills with 4 while Davis and Lopez each had 3. Davis and Rosenberger each led in aces with 6 while Neher had 4.
Neher led in digs with 9 while Salazar had 8 assists. Mizener followed with 5.
Taft carried their momentum into the bracket semi final match where they defeated Desert Christian 25-13, 25-11.
Reilly led in kills with 7 while Lopez had 3. Davis led in aces with 5 while Warner had 3. Faagau and Lopez each had a block while Nher and Davis each led in digs with 7. Salazar had 18 assists.
In the championship match, Taft defeated Kern Valley 25-8, 25-16.
Reilly led in kills with 4 while Warner, Vanessa Uribe, Lopez and Everson each had 3. Davis led in aces with 5 while Warner had a block. Neher led in digs with 11 while Reilly had 4. Salazar led in assists with 8.
Taft kicks off the South Sequoia League season Tuesday when they host Arvin. The match begins at 6:30 p.m.
