Arvin wins in four sets
It wasn't the way the Taft varsity volleyball team wanted to open the South Sequoia League season after the Arvin Bears edged out the Lady Wildcats 27-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-27 in Taft Tuesday evening.
Arvin the momentum early in the first set when they jumped out to a 4-2 advantage. The Lady Bears kept the small lead until Taft tied it up at six. The tie was the first of three over the next few moments of the set.
Following the last tie, it looked as if the Lady Bears would pull away after going on a 6-1 run to lead 15-10. However, Taft fought back to get within one at at 16-15. After Arvin briefly pulled ahead again, Taft bounced back to tie the score at 19 on Sarah Lopez's tip. The tie was the first of four with the Lady Bears having a chance to win the set three times before they scored the final two points to take the set.
The back and forth action did not let up in the second set with Arvin and the Lady Wildcats tying each other six times. It looked as if Taft would pull away with a mini 2-0 run but Arvin roared to life with a 9-1 run including eight straight points to overtake the lead at 18-9.
Taft would get within eight points three different times before cutting the lead down to seven at 23-16 but Arvin got the final two points to win the set.
Arvin continued their roll into the third set with a 4-0 run. Taft countered by tying the set at four and again at five before reeling off three unanswered points to lead 8-5. The Lady Bears countered with a 4-1 run to regain the lead at 12-9. Taft answered by tying the set at 12 and again at 14 while Arvin tied the set at 15.
Following the last tie, Taft attempted to pull away again to lead 18-15. After the Lady Bears got within one at 18-17, Taft went on a 5-1 run to up the lead to 23-18. After Arvin scored a pair of points, Taft countered with two out of the next three to win the set.
Arvin regained momentum early in the final set with a 5-2 run including the opening three points of the set. Taft was not about to go away with a 5-2 run to take the lead at 7-5. After Arvin tied the score, Taft pushed ahead with a small lead until they went on a 3-0 run to lead 14-10.
The Lady Bears fought back to get within one at 16-15 but Taft held onto the short lead until Arvin knotted the score at 20. After Arvin took over the lead Taft tied it up again. Taft surged ahead and was one point away from sending the match to a fifth set when Arvin tied the score at 24. After Taft regained the lead, Arvin scored the final two points to win the set and match.
