Lady Eagles win by three

BAKERSFIELD —The Taft High varsity girls’ tennis team lost its second match of the year to the undefeated Bakersfield Christian Eagles, 6-3, on Tuesday.    

BCHS also won the JV contest, 8-1.   

“Bakersfield Christian’s top three players were enough to carry the day for them,” Taft varsity coach Jim Carnal summed up. “Their No. 1 player, Delaney Roche is the best player in Kern County.”

Roche had no trouble with Taft’s Kelsey Rushing, 6-0, 6-0. Abby Stevens dispatched Taft’s Anneca Taylor, 6-0, 6-3. And freshman Annabella McGilivary beat Taft’s Dariana Calderon, 6-1, 6-1. After that, the match was more competitive. Taft’s Zayn Herrera beat Kaylee Curless, 6-2, 6-1. Taft’s Leighton May lost to Delany Anderholtz, 6-2, 6-2. Taft sophomore Brisa Guizar came from behind in both sets to beat junior Marguex Hein, 7-5, 7-5.

BCHS coach Frank Thiessen took no chances and put his top two players at No. 1 doubles and his No. 3 player at No. 3 doubles to seal the win. Roche and Stevens beat Rushing and Calderon, 6-2, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, Taft’s Herrera and May handled Curless and Olivia Meger, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 3 doubles, No. 8 Elizabeth Huizar and No. 9 Diana Huizar were no match for No. 3 McGilivary and No. 7 Tessa Touchstone, losing 6-1, 6-0.

Taft dropped to 6-2 overall; 5-2 in the South Sequoia League. BCHS virtually assured another SSL title with the win, improving to 9-0 overall; 6-0 in the SSL.

The JV match was even more one-sided. At No. 1 singles, Cielo Woggn lost 6-3, 6-3. Rosa Silva lost 6-0, 6-2. Number 3 Alondra Cisneros barely lost, 6-4, 2-6, 11-9. Brenda Santiago fell, 6-0, 6-1, Brenda Ambriz lost 6-1, 6-0, and Erina Tuaila lost a close match, 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles, Cisneros and Santiago lost 8-4. Woggn and Chloe McAfee lost 6-2, 6-1. And, Ambriz and Amber Jensen picked up a hard-fought win, 6-3, 0-6, 10-4.

Taft’s JV dropped to 6-9 overall; 4-2 in the SSL.

Next week, Taft’s varsity travels to Cesar Chavez on Tuesday and Shafter on Wednesday, while the JV team plays in Taft. On Thursday, Taft’s varsity hosts McFarland. McFarland does not have a JV team.
