Only loss was to Shafter
The Taft freshmen girls basketball team may have gotten off on the wrong foot to begin the season, but they attempted to bounce back Thursday and Saturday by going 2-1 in the Independence Tournament in Bakersfield.
With the tournament record, the Lady Wildcats are 3-5.
Taft had a scare in the first game Thursday when they edged out Frontier 14-13.
Faith Kast, Brianna Morales and Reagan Montgomery each had 4 points in the game while Jaydnn Rosenberger had 2.
The Lady Wildcats had an easier time in the second game after they defeated Mira Monte 17-13.
“This was a great game because all of the girls were involved,” said Michelle Gerry. “I really felt like the team was playing as a team and we really wanted to beat Mira Monte after losing to them in our first game. Our defense was great and even though the game was very physical the girls stayed in the game and continued to fight.”
Faith Kast led Taft in scoring with 11 while Reagan Montgomery had 6.
The Lady Wildcats wrapped up their tournament Saturday with a 24-13 loss to league rival Shafter.
“We really had a hard time getting the ball down the court to run our offense,” said Gerry. “Shafter played pretty tight man on man defense and it took a while for us to adjust. The good news is we didn’t give up and we started to get a little more comfortable toward the end of the game, but unfortunately we just ran out of time. I’m pretty sure we took 4th in the tournament, which isn’t bad at all.”
Rosenberger led in scoring with 5 while Kast had 4 and Montgomery and Brianna Morales each had 2.
