RFK, Liberty of Bakersfield and Ridgeview all lose
Kern County high school football teams have signed off with broken hearts.
All three Kern reps still alive in the post-season grind lost last weekend, losing bids to play in state bowl games in Sacramento this weekend.
That trio included the South Sequoia League’s Kennedy High of Delano, the Division VI valley champ, which lost a 59-45 shootout to Saddleback Valley Christian High in Laguna Hills.
The Thunderbirds, who lost a 39-36 regular season shootout to Taft High, finished the season 10-4 while Saddleback rides into its Division V-A state championship skirmish a spotless 15-0.
Meanwhile, Division I valley champ Liberty of Bakersfield was victimized by missed opportunities in losing its bid for a state bowl game with a 28-24 loss to Del Oro High of Loomis. Liberty finished 9-4. Del Oro takes a 9-6 record to the state bowl.
And Bakersfield’s Ridgeview High (13-1), the valley’s Division II kingpin, missed out on the big show by losing 35-20 to Narbonne High of Harbor City (13-2). Ridgeview’s offensive coordinator is Taft High and Taft College product Chris Bandy.
Liberty and Ridgeview hosted their regional playoffs but Kennedy had to travel south.
