'Old Henderson Estate' goes up in flames
Fire destroyed a well-known home that had been vacant for two decades early Saturday.
The, house referred to as the "Old Henderson Estate" sat south of the 200 block of East Kern Street along Highway 119.
The 2,000-square foot wood frame structure was engulfed in flames and the Kern County Fire Department received multiple calls just before 6 a.m.
The standard structure fire response of three engines and a ladder truck was reinforced with another engine.
The overall response included about 21 personnel, including the four engines and truck plus a support engine with extra air bottles.
Firefighters initiated a defensive attack, preventing the fire from spreading and had it under control in about 25 minutes.
Damage is estimated at $100,000.
the cause is under investigation.
Arson investigators were on scene and a KCFD spokesman confirmed witness reports that the Taft Police Department detained one person.
Area residents said the house was once owned by Tom and Martha Henderson, the owners of an adjacent machine shop. The house with a swimming pool, and the shop complex have been vacant for at least 20 years.
