Taft works out in intrasquad scrimmage with season opener two weeks away

Despite hot temperatures and the fact the calendar said mid August, the Taft High football teams took the first steps to the start of the season Saturday evening when they took part in a scrimmage at Martin Memorial Stadium.

The freshmen and junior varsity teams started the scrimmage by playing against each other.

“We were excited that the boys took it up to game speed,” said Taft junior varsity coach Brad Van Roekel. “We want to put up the speed at practice.

Over the course of the hour, the junior varsity and freshmen teams each got 40 plays on offense and on defense. There was one play that stood out to Van Roekel.

“Skylar Mitchell showed us a lot tonight,” he said.

After the freshmen and junior varsity teams were done it was the varsity team’s turn.

Following warm ups, the Wildcat offense went against the Wildcat defense.

On the first play of the scrimmage, the offense scored on a moderately deep pass for the touchdown.

“We wanted to move the ball,” said Taft coach George Falgout. “That was our goal to achieve that first play.”

All totaled, the Wildcats ran 10 plays on offense and another 10 on defense.

“Defensively we had some guys in different positions that made some big plays up front,” said Falgout.

After they worked on their plays, the team worked on their punting and point after tries.

One of the things Falgout says the team needs to work on is stamina.

“We got to get in shape,” he said. ‘They have to understand its four quarters of football.”

Taft will have another chance to work on their game when they host South and Tehachapi next Friday.

“We have to be ready to be prepared to face these two teams,” said Falgout.

Due to the heat that is expected next Friday, the scrimmage for the freshmen and junior varsity teams along with the varsity team will start at 7:30 p.m.

The varsity will play in Martin Memorial Stadium while the freshmen and junior varsity will play at the track.

One week after they take part in the scrimmage, the Wildcats will officially kick off their season at home against Golden Valley.

The freshmen will start on Thursday at 5 p.m., while the junior varsity and varsity play Friday at 5 and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
