Taft volleyball sweeps Golden Valley in three sets

There was a party going on in the Taft High gym Tuesday evening. The Taft varsity volleyball team capped that celebration by defeating the Golden Valley Bulldogs 25-18, 25-20 and 25-21 in their first home match of the season.

The start of the match was a battle with the teams tying each other nine times to begin the first set. In that span of time, both sides held a lead no larger than two. Following the last tie, Taft was able to maintain a small lead until Golden Valley knotted the score at 16. Taft took off from there by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 6-2 the rest of the way to win the first set.

Taft carried that momentum into the second set by reeling off five straight points to open the set. Golden Valley attempted to climb back into the set with a 3-0 run but thanks in part to a pair of aces from Sarah Lopez, the Lady Wildcats went on a 4-0 run to lead 9-3.

The Lady Bulldogs bounced back again by cutting the deficit to 10-9 and again at 11-10.

Taft threatened to take off again this time going on a 6-0 run. However, Golden Valley stormed back to get within two at 18-16. That would be as close as the Lady Bulldogs would get as the Lady Wildcats held a narrow lead including a 3-1 run to win the second set 25-20.

Golden Valley attempted to turn the tables at the start of the final set by outscoring Taft 4-1. Taft would battle back to tie the score at five. The tie was a sign of things to come over the several minutes of the game with both sides tying each other nine times. In that period of time, the largest lead either side had was Golden Valley at 12-10.

Following the final tie, Taft attempted to pull away with a 3-0 run but Golden Valley countered by narrowing the score to one at 19-18 and again at  20-19. Taft would take off from there by outscoring Golden Valley 4-2 the rest of the way to win the set and match.
