Sarah Lopez led in kills with 7
Whether it has been a tournament or a home match one thing has remained the same for the Taft varsity volleyball team and that is winning. The Lady Wildcats continued that early season momentum in Bakersfield Tuesday evening when they swept the High Scots 25-15, 25-23, 25-15.
With the victory, Taft improves to 5-0-2 in the young season.
Taft had the momentum from the opening serve as they outscored the Lady Scots to begin the first set. Highland bounced back with five unanswered points to even the set at seven.
The Lady Wildcats attempted to pull away again with a 4-0 run highlighted by Hunter Everson’s ace. Taft maintained a small lead until they outscored Highland 5-1 to increase the lead to 18-11. During that period of time, Sarah Lopez had an ace.
After the teams traded points, Taft outscored Highland 6-2 to win the opening set.
Highland threatened to turn the tables at the start of the second set when they outscored the Lady Wildcats 5-2. Taft would eventually bounce back to tie the score at five. The set turned into a battle with the teams tying each other six different times. In that span of time, Highland had the biggest lead at three at two different times.
Including the final tie, Taft regained the momentum with a 5-0 run to build an 18-14 advantage. Taft would hold onto the small lead until the Lady Scots tied the score at 23. However, Taft scored the final two points including Lopez’s ace to close out the second set.
After the teams tied each other three times, Taft reeled off four straight points to overtake the lead at 7-5. Highland narrowed the lead down to one, but Taft caught fire again with a 5-0 run including Everson’s aces that barely went over the net.
Following Highland’s next point, Taft went on a 5-2 run to up their advantage to eight at 17-9. After another Highland point, the Lady Wildcats went on a 5-1 run thanks in part to Allison Mizener’s ace.
Highland made an attempt to get back into the set with three unanswered points, but Taft scored the final two points capped by Destiny Goff’s ace.
Lopez led in kills with 7 while Neher, Everson and Pulido each had 4. Everson led in aces with 3 while Lopez had 2. Lopez led in blocks with 2. Mizener led in digs with 7. Lopez followed with 6 while Neher had 5.
