Newcomers Wendy Barry and John Kopp elected to TUHS board, Kathy Orrin to college board. TC Board President Billy White is only incumbent re-elected
Voters ousted three of the four incumbents seeking reelection to the Taft Union High School District Board Governing Board and West Kern Community College District Board of Trustees on Tuesday.
Only Billy White, the longest-serving member of the college board, won reelection.
In the high school race, two former TUHS teachers defeated incumbents George Harmer and Tom White.
Wendy Barry, now a biology professor and John Kopp, mentoring director for the Holmes family Scholarships, both left Taft High in the past couple of years. Berry taught there for 11 years and Kopp was a social studies teacher for 21 years.
Berry led in the voting with 1,777 votes (30.53 percent) and Kopp took second with 1,440 (24.74 percent).
White was third with 1,342 votes (23.06 percent) and Harmer was fourth with 832 (14.3).
A third challenger, Michael Eveland received 422 votes.
In the college race, the one challenger, retired Taft City School District principal and current Taft District Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kathy Orrin won a seat, ousting Kal Vaughn.
White led in the voting with 2,107 votes (34.88 percent) Orrin took second with 2097 (34.62 percent) and Vaughn had 1,832 votes (30.33).
