Andrea Garner throws one-hitter but TC can't score

MERCED – Merced College got just one hit off Taft College pitcher Andrea Garner here Tuesday but it was enough to earn the Blue Devils a 2-0 victory in the Central Valley Conference softball opener for both schools.

Garner struck out the first batter she faced before walking the next two. Merced clean-up hitter and pitcher Breanna Lopez then socked a double that got both runners home.

Besides the game-winning hit, Lopez pitched a three-hit shutout. She struck out six Cougars and walked only one.

Garner struck out three and walked two, both free passes coming in the first and providing Merced’s only runs. After giving up the game-winning hit to her counterpart, Garner retired the next 14 batters she faced before hitting a batter with one-out in the sixth.

The Cougars, meanwhile, got just four base runners off Lopez – a walk and singles by Halle Neher, Keana Ratcliff-Hogan and Sonja Lawrence.

TC (0-1 CVC, 1-5 overall) hosts Glendale College (1-5) Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
