Brian Massey worked for Taft Fire Department before joining KCFD in 2007

The Kern County Fire Department just announced the sudden passing of a firefighters with long ties to Taft.

Brian Massey, 56, died unexpectedly Saturday evening.

Massey worked at The Taft Fire Department for 17 years before joining the KCFD in 2007 when it took over fire protection for the city.

The KCFD released this statement Sunday afternoon:

"It is with deep sadness and regret that we must announce that Kern County Fire Engineer Brian Massey has passed away. At 8:00 am on Saturday morning, Brian completed a 48-hour shift at Station 22 in Maricopa. Later that evening, at approximately 10:00 pm, Brian had a significant medical event while at home. He was transported to a local hospital where he died. Brian was 56 years old. His death will be considered a Line of Duty Death.
Brian is survived by his three children children Brooke, Breanna, and Brandon; his girlfriend of 9 years Glenna Hammond; and his parents Dale and Karen Massey. 
Brian started his employment with Kern County Fire Department on May 8, 2007. He previously was employed by Taft Fire Department where he started his firefighting career in 1990.
This sudden loss of Brian is very difficult. Please keep his family in your prayers.
In recognition of Engineer Massey's service to the community, Fire Chief Brian Marshall has ordered flags at all Kern County Fire Stations to be flown at half-staff until 5:00 pm on the day of Brian's funeral."
