Traditional service honors those who served
The West Side Cemetery District, with assistance from Erickson & Brown Funeral Home and Fellows American Legion Post #63, will host Taft's traditional Memorial Day Observance on Monday.
The annual ceremony starts at 10 a.m. at the cemetery at 440 East Cedar Street.
Gary Summers, a United States Army veteran and president of the West Side Cemetery District, will lead dedication of a veteran memorial.
Kailee Baker and the Lincoln Junior High Band will perform the Star Spangled Banner at the start of the ceremony and the band will play "Salute to America" at the end before the benediction and 21-gun salute by the American Legion firing squad.
The ceremony will include the flag raising by Abigail Verela, Logan Kelley and Zain Bravo, Tanner Melton will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
Bag Piper Dee Stoller will perform before and after the service.
In addition, the traditional floral tributes of the red flower of courage, white flower of purity, blue flower of truth and wreath of remembrance will be placed at the foot of the doughboy statue.
Summer will also conduct a POW and MIA remembrance.
Joel Bauer will be the master of ceremonies.
