Vehicle overturns just east of I-5. Two more suffer major injuries

Three teenagers from Taft were killed and two others suffered major injuries in a single-vehicle accident on Highway 119 east of I-5 late Tuesday night,

The California Highway patrol said a 19-year-old Taft woman was westbound on the highway near Erro Ranch Road (just east of the freeway overpass) at 10:45 p.m. when she allowed 2001 Ford SUV to drift off the roadway and onto the right shoulder where it overturned several times, landing on its side.

The driver and two passengers, a 19-year-old man and 17-year-old girl, were pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP reported.

Two other passengers, a 17-year-old girl and 19-year-old man, both from Taft, suffered major injuries and were taken to Kern Medical for treatment.

None of the victims' names had been released by early Wednesday.

According to the CHP, the 17-year-old survivor and the driver were the only ones utilizing safety restraints

The collision is still under investigation.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
