Kickoff for Taft will be Saturday, June 2 at 27 Cougar Court
The Kern County Library is taking children, tweens, teens, and adults on an adventure via the annual countywide Summer Reading Challenge (June – July) by encouraging youth to read during summer – which helps instill a love of recreational reading and curb summer learning loss.
The kickoff at the Taft Branch, 27 Cougar Court, is Saturday at 2 p.m.
Numerous studies show that those who read during the Summer often out-perform others once back in school. Once 10 titles (or hours for tweens and teens) are recorded and verified in person, customers become a “Finisher!”
Finishers earn a free book and incentives, while supplies last. This year, the Kern County Fair, the Bakersfield Condors, the Bakersfield Train Robbers, Rollerama West, the Adventist Health Ice Center of Bakersfield, LEGOLAND®, Auntie Anne’s®, Black Angus Steakhouse, Blaze Pizza, BJ’s® Restaurant and Brewhouse, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Rubio’s Coastal Grill, and the Friends of the Kern County Library, Inc., along with other businesses have donated books, coupons, discounts, and vouchers as goodies for Finishers.
All Summer long, the KCL Summer Reading Challenge offers over 2,500 free events and programs for all ages, exposing the community to new skills, ideas, and learning opportunities. This Summer’s theme is Reading Takes You Everywhere! Events included are magic shows, puppet shows, reptile shows, STEAM events, and many more programs that encourage and support a love of reading. This is an opportunity to cultivate curiosity through books, technology, and a rich variety of programs. Last year, over 48,000 people attended Summer Reading Challenge events at libraries countywide.
How to Participate in the Summer Reading Challenge:
•First, pick up a Reading Log in person at your local Kern County Library branch.
•Children Read 10 books, magazines, graphic novels, audiobooks, or eBooks. Record your titles in the Reading Log & have a parent sign it.
•Tweens & teens Read for 10 hours or read 10 books, magazines, audiobooks, or eBooks. Record your titles in the Reading Log & have a parent sign it.
•Adults Motivate yourself to read more books this Summer by setting a reading goal. We suggest a goal of at least 5 books! Track & rate the books you want to read or are reading.
•Once completed, return your log by Tuesday, July 31. You will receive a free book, provided by the Friends of the Kern County Library and can receive additional goodies, while supplies last.
