Planning Commission also OKs Sunset Mercantile project
The Taft Planning Commission approved site plans for two new commercial developments on Rails to Trails, clearing the way for construction to start on a new Dollar General Store and a second structure that could house up to four or five businesses.
The projects include a 9,100 square foot Dollar General merchandise store on the east side of Tenth Street between Front Street and Supply Row and the 10,000 square foot Sunset Mercantile building on the same side of Tenth between Supply Row and Rails to Trails.
No time frame for the start of construction or opening dates was immediately available, but City Director of Planning and Development Services said both buildings could be complete just a few months after construction starts.
"Both projects were approved at the meeting on Wednesday. The Commissioners did not ask about the construction timeline, but I foresee both projects moving ahead at about the same pace with plan checks and eventually construction," Staples told the Taft Midway Driller. "Both buildings probably can be built in as little as 6 months from the first groundbreaking, but not sure how much detail work of the interiors specific to tenants may make that timeline longer."
No tenants have been announced for the Supply Row Mercantile building at the northeast corner of Tenth and Supply Row, but it is being built to house up to five businesses.
"The commercial units will vary in size at 2,000 or 4,000 square feet to provide flexibility in commercial uses from retail, personal service, and restaurant uses," according to city staff reports filed in connection with the project. "The site design provides a one way drive-through aisle along the north side of the building to allow for a drive-through lane for a future restaurant in one of the units. The new building will have an architectural design that continues the theme found in the recently finished Taft Transit Center."
Across the street, the Dollar General is going to provide several new jobs to the area and will be open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The Dollar General and Sunset Mercantile are the first retail projects for the Rails to Trails Property.
