Pontiac collides with 3-axle truck, closes Highway 119 for almost three hours

A man suffered major injuries and was pinned in the wreckage of a sedan after an early morning crash in Valley Acres Friday.

The accident happened on Highway 119 east of Cherry Avenue just after 3 a.m.

The California Highway Patrol said the victim, believed to be an Oregon resident, was northbound on the highway and for unknown reasons his Pontiac G6 drifted into southbound lanes and collided head-on with a 3-axle, 80,000-pound oilfield service truck.

Officers are speculating the driver of the Pontiac may have fallen asleep.

The victim was taken to Kern Medical for treatment after being extricated.

His name was not released.

The driver of the truck was not injured, the CHP said.

A dog in the car was killed.
Highway 119 was blocked for almost three hours and the road was reopened just before 6 a.m.
