Unsafe hunting practices blamed

A hunter was accidentally shot and seriously injured by a member of his own hunting party in a remote part of the Carrizo Plain National Monument last week.

The victim, who was not identified, was airlifted to Kern Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office investigated the shooting and determined it was an accident and no foul play was involved.
The San Luis Obispo Tribune reported the victim, a man in his 60s whose name was not releaed, was hunting with others in his group in the Caliente Mountains north of New Cuyama.

Quoting DFW officials, the Tribune reported that one of the hunters saw movement in the brush and fired with a high-powered rifle, striking the victim.
