Driver swerved to avoid crates on Copus Road

One person was killed and four others injured in a traffic accident on Copus Road Friday morning.

One of the injured is in critical condition at Kern Medical.
The CHP said the crash occurred at 6:28 a.m. when a car struck a large wooden crate in the middle of the road and went into oncoming traffic.

CHP Officer Adam Taylor said a Honda Accord registered out of Taft was eastbound on Copus about halfway between Basic School Road and Old River Road at dawn when the car came upon several large crates in the roadway.

The driver swerved to avoid them but struck one, which pushed the car into the westbound lanes where it collided with a Chevrolet Avalanche.

The right front passenger of the Honda died at the scene.

A passenger in the rear seat, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered critical injuries in the crash and was airlifted to Kern Medical.

The driver suffered moderate injuries.

The driver and a passenger in the Avalanche suffered minor injuries.
