Taft woman was critically injured and died Tuesday in Kern Medical ICU

Friday's traffic accident on Copus Road east of Taft has claimed a second victim.

Edith Silva Bautista, 24, of Taft, died Tuesday night in the intensive care unit at Kern Medical.

Bautista was critically injured in the crash that killed another person and injured four others.

She was rear seat passenger in a Honda Accord driven by Alfredo Silva Gomez, 24, also of Taft.

Gomez was driving at about 55 miles per hour east on Copus Road when he swerved to avoid wood crates in the roadway. The car struck one, swerved into the westbound lanes and collided with a Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Hilda Verduzco, 49, of Bakersfield.

A front seat passenger, Jorge Santiago Bautista, 19, of Taft, died in the collision.

Edith Bautista was airlifted to Kern Medical in critical condition.

She was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Gomez suffered moderate injuries and Verduzco and her passenger escaped with minor injuries.
