Douglas Lewis pleads no contest to running over friend after argument in 2017

A New Cuyama man was sentenced to three years in state prison for running over and killing his friend during an argument.

Douglas Allan Lewis had pleaded no contest to felony hit and run causing death and a misdemeanor drug count in connection with the death of Travis John Studer, 41, also of New Cuyama, in July 2017.

Lewis received his sentence at a hearing in Santa Barbara County Superior Court last week.

According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff's investigators, the incident occurred following a fight over a woman.

Studer's body was discovered in the 5000 block of Highway 166 with tire marks on it and a baseball bat nearby.

According to reports, Lewis said Studer tried to use a bat to smash open the door to his truck. Detectives later observed a dent on the passenger door of Lewis' truck and damage to the windshield.

Lewis apparently struck and killed Studer with his truck as he left the scene. While he told detectives that he "felt a little thud" on one of his truck tires as he tried to leave, Lewis said he did not know he had run over Studer. He insisted that the incident was a complete accident.
