Second victim airlifted from scene of head-on with major injuries

One man was killed and another suffered major injuries in a head-on collision on a rural road east of Taft Thursday morning.

The crash took place just before 7:30 a.m. on Gardner Field Road about a quarter mile east of South Lake road.

The vehicles, a full-sized pickup and a minivan or small SUV, ended up about 150 feet apart.

Kern County firefighters had to extricate both victims with hydraulic tools.

The victim in the pickup was freed in about 20 minutes.
The second man was trapped for about 30 minutes.
Firefighters and paramedics treated both men at the scene, but the driver of the minivan was pronounced dead.
The driver of the pickup was flown to Kern Medical by helicopter.
