One Taft man killed, another seriously injured in collision

The California Highway Patrol said a Taft man killed in a traffic accident on Gardner Field Road Thursday inexplicably drove across the center line into oncoming traffic.

The CHP said Luis Figueroa Topete, 48, was in a 2006 Dodge Caravan traveling northbound on Gardner Field Road south of South Lake Road at an unknown speed when, "for an unknown reason" he crossed over into the opposing lane and collided with a southbound 2018 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Jorge Plascencia, 50, of Taft.
Topete was fatally injured.
Plascencia suffered major injuries and was flown to Kern Medical for treatment, the CHP said.
A passenger in the pickup, Juan Plascencia, 36, of Taft, suffered minor injuries and was not transported.
The crash took place about 7:25 a.m.
Drugs or alcohol are apparently not factors in the accident, the CHP said.
