Fast food franchise to locate on dirt pad in shopping center, auto parts to go in on 900 block of Kern

Starbucks isn't the only national chain store planning to open a new store in Taft.

It looks like the community is getting another fast food franchise and an auto parts store.

City Manager Craig Jones confirmed that Jack in the Box is planning to build a new location in the vacant dirt pad in the parking lot in the Albertsons shopping Center, and O'Reilly's Auto Parts is planning to build in the vacant lot on the 900 block of Kern Street next to Fastrip.

Both projects are still the the early stages and opening dates have not been announced.

The city has been working with developers on both deals for some time, but had nothing official to announced until this week.

The O'Reilly’s project has been in the works for three years, Jones said.

“When it comes to boosting the local economy, every little bit helps,” Jones said.

The new business will increase property taxes and sales tax in addition to providing more jobs.

The Jack in the Box and O'Reilly’s projects will take longer than Starbucks to complete since they involved new construction as opposed to just tenant improvements for Starbucks, which will move into a building occupied by restaurants for many years at the east end of the Albertsons Shopping Center.

O'Reilly’s is a a national chain with more than 5,200 stores in 47 states, according to Wikipedia.

It was founded in 1967 as a family-owned business and is publicly traded on the NASDAQ market under the symbol ORLY.

Jack In the Box is a well-known name with numerous locations in Bakersfield and one near I-5 in the Buttonwillow area.
