Taft woman served as hospital volunteer, was named Citizen of the Year in 1992
She was surrounded by friends, family and well-wishers at her 100th birthday celebration at the local American Legion Post. She was a little taken back at the size of the party.
"I'm totally surprised," she said. "I'm not the first to reach 100."
Her daughter, Martha Caldwell Throckmorton, invited everyone in her mothers address book.
Caldwell is well known in the community and served as a long-time volunteer at West Side District Hospital.
In 1992, she was named Citizen of the Year by the Rotary Club of Taft.
Caldwell has lived in the same house right across the street from Conley School, since 1951.
Among the well wishers was Conley Principal Lisa Kindred, who presented Caldwell with flowers and cards from the students to thank her for being a good neighbor.
Caldwell is the mother of two.
She also has a son, John, and she is the grandmother of three.
