Afternoon highs will drop into the 70s by Sunday
Taft endured the hottest day of the year so far, but there's big break in the weather coming.
After a high of 106 Thursday afternoon, gusty winds overnight Thursday will mark the start of a cooling trend that will see afternoon highs drop by 30 degrees in a couple of days.
Thursday's blistering heat will give way starting Friday and continuing cooling through the weekend.
Friday's high is expected to be 89, cooling to 80 on Saturday and then dropping to 73 on Sunday.
the cooling is coming from a low pressure system currently off the central California coast that will move over the area starting Friday. As it approaches, gust wind will kick up on the west side of the Valley and the Taft area could see winds gusts up to 30 miles per hour Thursday night.
A wind advisory is in effect for the valley west of I-5 from Los Banos south to Taft through 5 p.m. Friday. Gusts in some outlying areas could get as high as 45 miles per hour. Taft's highest winds will be Thursday and Friday evening.
By Sunday, afternoon highs will be in the low 70s and up to 15 degrees below normal for early June.
Highs will gradually warm next week, rising to the mid 90s by next Thursday.
Overnight lows this weekend will cool into the 50s Saturday and Sunday.
