Car goes into ravine near Kern-SLO County line

One person was killed when a vehicle plunged down a steep ravine on Highway 58 near the Kern-San Luis Obispo County line Friday afternoon.

Few details are available at this point, but Kern County and Cal Fire San Luis Obispo firefighters, the California Highway Patrol and air and ground ambulances were dispatched to the remote crash site on the Highway near the crest of the Temblor Range at about 3:40 p.m. It was just inside Kern County.

According to the CHP website, the car was about 500 feet below the roadway. Firefighters climbed down to the wreckage but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The highway was closed for several hours because of the rescue attempt and later so a tow truck could pull the wrecked vehicle back up to the roadway.

No information about the victim was immediately available.
